It was occasinally used as a substitute for saffron and as a yellow hair dye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> The second part of its botanical name<i> ossifragum<\/i> comes from two latin words meaning &#8216;bone breaking&#8217;. \u00a0It was believed that grazing the plant made the bones of sheep brittle. \u00a0This has been shown to be untrue. \u00a0It is probable that the bone weakenss is caused by the absence of mineral salts in the soil where the plant grows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"CENTER\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00644.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1005 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00644.jpg?resize=960%2C720\" alt=\"DSC00644\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00644.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00644.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00644.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> The heath spotted orchid of mountain and rough commonage is at least a month later coming into bloom than its lowland cousin. \u00a0Over the past two weeks they have blossomed in great profusion and are particularly rich in &#8216;Anne&#8217;s Secret Garden&#8217; which I named for a neighbour who first told me about it. \u00a0The &#8216;garden&#8217; is less than a hundred meters east of the L3016 just after the road leaves the Scots Pine woods a few hundred meters short of the foot of Mangerton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"LEFT\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00625.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1008 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00625.jpg?resize=960%2C720\" alt=\"DSC00625\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00625.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00625.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.guidekillarney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC00625.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;
